Welcome to the issue. How is your summer going? Are you enjoying the last gasp of summer or tripping out that it is almost over? I am doing both. If there is anything that could rip me right out of summer bliss, it’s thinking about what I want to buy for fall which is what happened when I was deciding on the five pieces to recommend below. Why isn’t it fun for me to think about Fall clothes that I want to buy (besides the fact that some of them are cost prohibitive for me)? Because I am a statement piece junkie which means that I can not saunter out of a sun-drenched rose haze after Labor Day and wait until the weather turns crisp and the natural urge arises to wear these runway pieces I really want. If I waited until that moment to buy these precious nuggets that would literally carry the rest of my Fall Fits, these items will be sold out. I have done the painful yet very fun work for you. And now, if your taste is similar to mine, we can all sit back and relax and get back to the end of summer vibes.
Speaking of summer vibes, or in my case, my pursuit of endless summer vibes, I invited energetic street style photographer Tyler Joe to share his thoughts on style from his unique vantage point outside the shows in New York, Milan, and Paris.
I was curious about which factors go into his decision process of who he takes photos of. Like what is it? And does it have anything to do with statement pieces or the trends of the season? It was super fun and a really illuminating conversation about personal style, perseverance, and passion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I had talking to him.

While this issue is about statement pieces which I consider to be outfit makers, I came away from my conversation with Tyler with more conviction about my belief on style. That is, it matters less what items you are wearing, and more about how you put them together and how you feel wearing them.
Our conversation didn’t change my personal affinity for statement pieces though. I love to have a sprinkling of runway heros for the new season. Just because I love them. Like my favorite toys of the season to play with. And I know that I can rely on them to pinch hit for me when my outfit muscle is fatigued. If I put on my favorite wow pieces with any basics - t shirts, jeans, whatever - I still feel great.
So let’s get to my picks….
Hours later……
Ouch, ouch, ouch. Oh, my brain hurts.
I’ve kind of reached the point where I’m like wait, why did I subject myself to this again? Like it’s August. I need to take it easy and have another margarita. Narrowing it down to only five pieces is a major feat for even ME who makes decisions about fashion for a living! But buying for myself is a lot different. This was NOT easy!
Before we proceed, I need to mention a couple of caveats:
Some if not all of these are bloody expensive. If something you like from my list does not work for your budget, try and find something like them. They all represent general trends of the season.
I have no idea if these items will be forever items for me or if I will even want to wear them in a year. Probably not. And I don’t care. I buy what I love and I repeat outfits and items a lot. If I find that I am not wearing something anymore, I resell it on somewhere like The Real Real. There are a lot of places out there to promote sustainability and share the love.
If I tried to make this list the top “get it or forget it” items full stop, the list would be far too long and would exceed five by a long-shot. So for the purpose of being concise, I am sticking to my personal taste.
So after many screen shots, three extra strength tylenols, and a drip drop rehydration packet in my water, here it goes. I present you my top five “get it or forget it” pieces. Like my dream sequence.

Omg TT all of that lead up and then no links, no explanation? Yep. These items speak for themselves. Like you can probably do the math and figure out what is special about them and how to possibly translate those aspects to other items.
